In the southeast of the city is where the Polytechnic campus of Arizona State University calls home. Although much has changed since Mesa was founded by Mormon missionaries more than 120 years ago the attributes that attracted those early settlers continue to draw thousand of newcomers each year. In the 1980's the city's population grew by a whopping 89 percent to 288,000 residents. It's current population has grown past the half million mark in 2004 and it's still growing.
