A Pet Friendly Home for our Four-Legged Friends

A Pet Friendly Home for our Four-Legged Friends A Pet Friendly Home for our Four-Legged Friends

Pets are a part of our lives and most of the time they are considered a family member. They are an important part of our lives that they deserve the best care possible. We want to live comfortably in our home but also making sure that our home is pet-friendly for the new addition. That is why oftentimes, families are remodeling their homes not only for themselves but also for the pets.

Creating a pet friendly home for our four-legged friends is very much like making a home safe for the children. There are toxic chemicals, fall hazards and other household items scattered around the house that pose a threat to the pets. If there is such thing as child-proofing, there is definitely a pet counterpart. Thus, creating our home a pet-friendly environment.

It takes a lot of commitment for the pet owners to be responsible in making sure that pets are happy, healthy and safe. Recognizing the things that are deemed hazardous to the pets is the most crucial in determining how pet-friendly a home is and this keeps us away from unnecessary trips to the vets.

Here are some of the ideas on how we can create a pet friendly home for our four-legged friends.

  • What foods to Avoid

Determine which food items are allowed to be feed to your pets. There are certain food items such as chocolate that might be detrimental to your pets health if consumed in a large amount. Much like humans, pet can develop allergies too that can lead to gastrointestinal problems, seizures, even death so it is best to keep foods away from your pets reach. Check here for the list of foods that are toxic to dogs and cats.

  • Secure and contain chemicals

Many household chemicals are very dangerous and toxic to animals. Some of the common toxins that pets can come in contact with are cleaning materials, medicines, insecticides and alcohol. Pets can chew through plastic bottles so keep these chemicals away from the pets. Latches can be useful when your pets are fascinated with drinking or playing in the toilets or getting into the cupboards.

  • Pet-friendly Plants

Many common plants can be toxic to your pets and were reported as having intense gastrointestinal effects. Lilies are specifically toxic to cats if bitten or eaten so you need to remove them from your flower arrangement. Others such as carnation, azalea, daisy, baby's breath and crabapples are included in the list.

  • Tuck the cords

Remember that cats and dogs like to chew on electrical cords and puppies in particular when teething are at high risk of electrocution. Dangling cords also a danger since pets might tangle and this might cause a heavy object to fall. So tuck the cords away or unplug them when not in use.

Creating a pet friendly home is more than just taking care of the pet's basic needs and showing them the love and care. It's more about taking the necessary steps to make sure that the environment is safe so pets can live a healthy and happy lives. Our pets are our most loyal friends, they give us unconditional love and faithfulness. Giving them a safe and healthy environment is what they truly deserve.
